Questions & Answers
What is orientation?
Orientation is a required two-day, one-night series of activities designed to ease the transition into college life. During Orientation, students will participate in different academic sessions and will receive their Fall Course Schedule. A variety of individual sessions will give incoming freshmen and their parents the opportunity to meet faculty, staff and students and to learn what it means to be a member of the Sacred Heart University community.
Each new student will be assigned an Orientation Leader for the two-day period. Orientation Leaders are upper class students who have had extensive training so that they can assist your needs over the two days.
Must I attend orientation?
Yes! All new commuter and residential students are required to participate in the entire Orientation program, including the overnight stay in one of the dorms! This is your opportunity to discuss classes and to meet with academic and student life staff. Orientation is also your first chance to meet and get to know your classmates.
How much will it cost for students?
There is no charge for students to attend Orientation. Parents/Guardians are charged nominal fees for registration and lodging (if applicable).
What should I bring with me?
As an important part of Orientation, all students will be staying overnight in one of our residence halls. You will be sharing a room with another new student. Orientation Leaders are on each floor to assist you with any questions. You will need to bring towels, sheets, a blanket or sleeping bag and a pillow. Dress is CASUAL. Be sure to wear and bring comfortable clothes. Please limit your luggage to one bag and label your bag.
What is the schedule of events?
The Orientation program begins with check-in at 8:30am in the Edgerton Center. Different academic sessions will take place first, followed by lunch, and afternoon informational sessions. Students can move into the residence halls around 5pm. A special dinner on the first night is followed by specifically designed sessions on college life and the evening concludes with entertainment and a class social. The second day begins early with breakfast. You will spend the morning in a series of academic sessions. The day will conclude about 1pm with a barbecue for students and parents! Because each component of Orientation is so important, you are asked to arrive on time and to remain through the closing session. Requests to leave early will not be honored!
Should my parents/guardians attend?
YES! We have designed a separate series of events just for parents/guardians. There will be many sessions on topics such as Financial Assistance, Student Billing, Information Technology, Career Services, Varsity Athletics, Academic Support Services, Residential Life, Commuter Life and much more. During the two day orientation your parent/guardian will also have the opportunity to meet and speak with many of the faculty and staff members at Sacred Heart University.
How much will it cost for parents/guardians?
The cost for Parent Orientation is $50 per person. The cost includes admittance to meals, sessions, events and informational packet. If you are interested in attending Parent Orientation, please have your student complete the guest reservation information. For parents/guardians, we do provide on-campus housing at $30 per night per person. While we don’t offer “hotel” accommodations, we can offer a clean, friendly environment. If your parents plan to stay on campus, they will be residing in one of the traditional student rooms (2 single beds) in a Resident Hall, which has central heating/air conditioning. Linens will be provided, including sheets and towels. Please have your parents plan to bring a pillow and a blanket (plus personal items) with them. Please note that parents are housed in separate residence hall from their student.
Traveling three hours or more?
You can arrange to arrive the evening before for an additional cost. Or if you or your parents have special needs that may affect your housing requirements or campus mobility, please call Bonnie Sokol, Student Life Office Manager at (203) 371–7846.
